Given that Americans usually win the British open it’s not a surprise that the bookies have them as the favourite nationality to win the tournament at 11/4, which starts Thursday at Royal Birkdale.

So we know that the Yanks have a good chance but which one, without the injured Tiger Woods, is most likely to win? As usual the bookies have opened the market on top American player for the tournament and heading the list is Phil Mickelson. Looking at the stats though this doesn’t seem to be Phil’s type of golf. As well as being long of the tee, which he is, you have to be accurate to avoid the heavy rough and the lefty is only 173rd in that department.

There’s been a bit of money for Stuart Cink this week and rightly so. He’s been very consistent this season making 14 out of 15 cuts and out of those finished in the top 25 eleven times. He isn’t that accurate when driving either but leads the PGA tour in eagles and he’ll have plenty of opportunities to add to that this week.

Justin Leonard seems to be excellent value in this market. A former winner of this Major he has had an excellent season so far making all but one cut and has already recorded his highest tournament earnings since 2004. Champion in 1997 we know he can play links golf and although his stats aren’t spectacular they are steady which could be good enough.
